Mélanger is Julia. A baking enthusiast.
For me there are very few things more rewarding in life than baking. For a number of years I have been the ‘resident’ baker of the family. Each birthday I will religiously present an ensemble of flour, sugar and eggs in many forms. That has extended to cookie and cake treats during the holidays. When entertaining, a brunch will inevitably include home baked bread, and a lunch or dinner will end with a baked dessert or pastry. I will use every opportunity to bake.
Having been fortunate to live in various countries around the world (and traveled to many more), I have also been inspired by the subtlety of regional differences in baking. I am fascinated of the origin of many baked goods and how a seemingly similar set of ingredients can produce such different outcomes. This makes baking for me an intriguing process.
Mélanger is a publication about this passion shared by many. The passion of baking. My journey carries me through many discoveries of home comforts and inspired travel… through holidays, celebrations, entertaining, design inspiration, new destinations or a re-discovery of familiar ones.
Mélanger captures how baking guides the mix that is my life.

Yes,the others who have commented are right–you’re photos are fantastic. I’m inspired to do better with mine. I am also amazed at the thoroughness of your treatise and creativity with macaroons. You are absolutely right that the Italian meringue is the most stable for the job.

I love your blog and the creativity you show!
Having just looked through my cookbook selection – I have (not counting BH&G) three baking books and want to expand my library. You mention yours in today’s post – would it be possible to get the names of some of your favorites? Your efforts are very inspirational!

Julia,
Thanks for sharing your ideas for expanding the cookbook library at E Street Kitchen! I feel a little (actually a lot) overwhelmed when I look for baking books and easily get distracted – your input will help me with some tried and true recommendations!
Your recommendations were right on re: baking. I love bread and “someday” would like to become a better bread baker, but it just isn’t in the cards right now. Until then – I will focus on sweets (no matter how much “suffering” is involved in that decision!).
Your recommendation re: David Lebovitz’s “Perfect Scoop” is right on the mark. I am waiting now for it to arrive and have made several of his ice creams with recipes found on the web…. all have been huge hits and some have already been repeats!!!!! As I write this – I am brining some chicken (didn’t have any pork) using “The Sweet Life In Paris” recipe for Roast Pork With Brown Sugar-Bourbon Glaze.
I appreciate your time and input!
Best regards with wishes that all is well!

Hi Julia
What a great blog and I do love the caramel ice cream post – your pictures just blow me away. I noticed you also went to savour for the macaron class – so did I! Wasn’t it totally worth it?

Hello Julia,
I’m sorry I didn’t have time to say good bye to you last night. I had to rush off to pick my sis up from the airport. Guess what? She brought some Sri Lankan cardamom tea with her – it’s lovely! I forgot to tell you that if you’re interested in coming along to my book launch it’s tomorrow at Avid Reader bookshop from 6pm. I’m talking to Sally Lynch fr Taste Trekkers about the state of cheap eating in Brisbane. Your blog looks fantastic and I love your pictures!
Hope to hear from you soon.

I am extremely jealous that you have baking talent- somehow I stuff up everything I bake. I did make a semi successful cheesecake the other day, so maybe the curse is lifting. I love love love macaroons so maybe I will attempt some this week. I’m pretty sure, with my baking history, that I should just go and buy some but will persist anyway.

Hi Julia
I’ve given you an award – please come stop by my blog to pick it up. I gave it to you because I love your monthly themes – they are fab and so inspiring. Plus you taught me how to make collages! Really grateful.
